Finalists announced for UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards
| Date: | 23 Mar 2010 | | Details: | Step Change in Safety and Oil & Gas UK have announced the finalists for this year's new UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards. Sponsored by Maersk Oil and due to be held on 21 April, the lunchtime event at Mercure Ardoe House Hotel will acknowledge significant contributions to safety by individuals and companies within the industry.
Awards will be presented in five categories: Safety Leadership, which recognises a highly motivated individual who works to ensure their team consistently works in a safe and professional manner; Safety Representative of the Year, which recognises active participation and effectiveness in promoting the industry's safety agenda; Preventative Safety Action, which recognises an individual who successfully intervened to prevent a potential incident; Most Promising Individual, which recognises an individual who has embraced the safety culture in the oil and gas industry; Innovation in Safety, a company award which recognises a company's innovative approach to safety through the implementation of a new process or technique.
Finalists for the awards are:
* Award for Safety Leadership (sponsored by Chevron Upstream Europe) - Dugald Bruce, warehouse manager with KCA Deutag; Kevin Hailes, north sea electrical technical authority with BP; and Graham Spencer, risk management adviser with Marathon Oil U.K. Ltd.
* Safety Representative of the Year (sponsored by Nexen Petroleum U.K. Limited) - John Duncan, sort 4 focal point with RBG Ltd; Stuart Mann, HVAC technician with Integrated Engineering Services Ltd; and Steve Walton, deck crew / stores with Wood Group Engineering (North Sea) Ltd.
* Award for Preventative Safety Action (sponsored by Nexen Petroleum U.K. Limited) - Sharon Brady, HSEQ advisor with Centrica Energy; John Roper, scaffolder / safety technician with RBG Ltd; and Peter Van Dyke, services team leader with AMEC.
* Safety Award for the Most Promising Individual (sponsored by Draeger Safety UK Limited) - Victoria Lee, trainee HSEQ advisor with BIS Salamis; Don Liddle, production supervisor with Nexen Petroleum UK Limited; and Joslynne Smith, HSSEIA advisor with Petrofac.
* Award for Innovation in Safety - Company Award (sponsored by ABB Engineering Services) - BP (Schiehallion FPSO); Bristow Helicopters Ltd; and Sparrows Offshore Services Limited.
A sixth award for Services to Safety will be chosen and presented by the co-chairs of Step Change in Safety; John Forrest, vice president of Talisman Energy (UK) Limited and Gordon Ballard, chairman of Schlumberger Oilfield UK plc.
Malcolm Webb, Oil & Gas UK's chief executive, said: "These awards will give recognition to outstanding safety behaviour. The new UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards provide a platform for top performers to share their safety achievements so that we can learn from each other and continue to work towards our shared goal of making the UK the safest place to work in the worldwide oil and gas industry.
