| Details: | A memorial commemorating those who perished on Flight 85N on 1 April 2009 will be placed in Johnston Gardens, off Viewfield Road, Aberdeen, it was confirmed today (16 February 2010). The memorial will take the form of an obelisk in black granite and will be inscribed with the names of those who died on the flight. The work is now underway and should be completed by mid to late March.
Malcolm Webb, chief executive of Oil & Gas UK and chairman of the Flight 85N Memorial Fund Committee, said: "The obelisk has been paid for by the Memorial Fund from the donations it received following last April's tragic event.
"We believe that Johnston Gardens, with its mature flowers, trees and waterfalls, is an appropriate place for the memorial which can be visited for quiet contemplation and private remembrance. The obelisk itself has been designed to be in keeping with the scale and character of the garden. I would like to thank Aberdeen City Council for their help and support in this matter.
"The principal purpose of the Flight 85N fund is to raise money for charitable purposes, and £330,000 has already been distributed to eleven charities selected by the families who lost loved ones on the flight. In addition it was decided that a small portion of the fund should be used to establish two symbols of remembrance for flight 85N, one a permanent place for the book of condolence and the other the obelisk in Johnston Gardens.
"Nothing can compensate the families of those who perished on 1 April 2009 for their loss, but it is the sincere hope of all of the memorial fund committee that this symbol of remembrance in Johnston Gardens will serve as a tasteful and respectful memorial to their loved ones."
