Safety Awards attract overwhelming number of entries proving safety is top of oil and gas agenda

Date:15 Feb 2010
Details:The nominations for this year's new UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards have now closed with an impressive number of entries received to take forward to the judging process. The lunchtime event, jointly organised by Oil & Gas UK and Step Change in Safety, will be held on 21 April and is sponsored by Maersk Oil. It recognises the importance of exemplary behaviour by individuals and companies in creating a safety culture that is based on the concept of personal responsibility for safety, pro-active and vigilant behaviour and open communication.

Overall, 91 nominations have been received for the five award categories of safety leadership, safety representative of the year, preventative safety action, most promising individual and innovation in safety.

A sixth award for Services to Safety will be chosen and presented by the co-chairs of Step Change in Safety; John Forrest, vice president of Talisman Energy (UK) Limited and Gordon Ballard, chairman of Schlumberger Oilfield UK plc.

Tom van Leenen, managing director of Maersk Oil, said: "As principal sponsor of these new Safety Awards we are delighted at the tremendous level of interest from the industry in this event, and the high number of nominations that have been received. This clearly demonstrates that companies not only take safety very seriously but they are also proud to acknowledge the commitment from the workforce in ensuring the high standards of safety that we all wish to see maintained all day, every day."

Gordon Ballard, chairman of Schlumberger Oilfield UK plc and co-chair of Step Change in Safety, said: "This year's awards ceremony is the first one to be jointly organised by Oil & Gas UK and Step Change in Safety. The impressive number of nominations for each category is another clear demonstration of the industry's commitment to safety and determination to reward those who strive for best safety practice. Through sharing and promoting positive examples of safety practice we can learn from each other and help ensure safety standards are not only met, but exceeded."

Not only have the Safety Awards attracted a remarkable number of nominations, but the demand to attend the event has been so strong that it has had to be moved to a larger venue. The new venue for the UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Awards is Mercure Ardoe House Hotel, South Deeside Road, Aberdeen.

At this event Judith Hackitt CBE, Chair of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), will be giving the first of a series of annual safety lectures.
