It is important that we share best practice examples within the industry and there is no better way of doing this than giving best performers a platform to share their safety achievements with the wider industry. The awards ceremony provides an excellent framework for this."

Speaking on behalf of the event's main sponsor, Tom van Leenen, managing director of Maersk Oil, said: "Across the oil and gas industry nothing matters more than the safety of our people, and Maersk Oil is delighted to be the main sponsor of these new Safety Awards. The emphasis on individual behaviours is extremely important, as a strong safety culture requires commitment from everyone, both offshore and onshore. Recognising the efforts and commitment of the people involved day to day will reinforce the message that we are all responsible for each others safety, and that we should take care of each other and stay safe at work all day, every day."

The closing date for entries is 8 February and the winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 21 April 2010. All winners will receive a specially commissioned UK Oil and Gas Industry Safety Medal by contemporary sculptor and medallist, Marian Fountain.
