New minimum industry training standard now widely adopted by industry - review shows
| Date: | 22 Dec 2009 | | Details: | Nine months on from its launch in April 2009, more than 4000 offshore workers have now completed the new Minimum Industry Safety Training Standard, making the scheme one of Step Change in Safety's most successful initiatives. A recent review of the new training standard showed that the majority of those who have already completed the training found it beneficial and directly relating to their offshore work.
The new standard was developed following concerns raised by the workforce about basic safety competence, particularly for new starts in the industry. They cover nine basic safety elements, including risk assessment and permit to work, mechanical lifting, and platform integrity. The new training standard is an addition to the existing offshore survival training and ensures that every employee working on an installation on the UKCS has the same starting level of safety understanding and awareness. There will be no need for individuals to undergo similar or repetitive training every time they visit a different installation.
Under the new standard, new starts to the industry are required to attend a two day training course, whereas existing workers are asked to complete a newly developed computer based training which identifies gaps in training and will be subject to a refresher every four years.
Alan Chesterman, leader of the Step Change in Safety competence work group, which drew up the standards, explained: "When we launched the standards, we made a commitment to review their effectiveness after six months which would allow us to gather feedback, learn from it and improve the standard. It is encouraging to see such a high number of workers having already completed the training and such a high satisfaction rating.
"There are still a number of challenges we need to overcome. Adopting common standards and engaging the essential support to apply them uniformly across industry is not an easy task and the next few months will see an increased engagement with those companies that are not yet using the MIST standard."
Dave Sherrit, learning and organisation development team leader for Chevron Upstream Europe, added: "Since rolling out MISTS within Chevron for experienced offshore employees in August, we have had a very positive response from the workforce. Were almost 97% done, with just a few employees, mainly onshore personnel who travel infrequently, still to complete the computer based training. The response from operations offshore has been excellent with all our Offshore Installation Managers supporting the roll out of MIST and providing positive feedback on the tool." | | Contact: | For further information, please contact Britta Hallbauer on 01224 577331
