Workforce engagement key to improving offshore safety, says Step Change in Safety

Date:09 Jun 2009
Details:Step Change in Safety, the UK offshore oil and gas industry's flagship safety initiative, is holding two events this month to hear directly from the workforce about their views on offshore safety, supporting the initiative's resolve to increase its level of workforce engagement.

On 10 June 2009, more than 100 safety representatives will come together at Step Change in Safety's special network meeting to share their experiences and insights, learn from best practice and discuss problems and issues arising across the industry.

This will be followed by a Share Fair on 24 June at which more than 200 delegates from across the oil and gas industry will promote effective collaboration through the sharing of best practice and learning across all industry sectors. The event will cover the full range of offshore safety from asset integrity to personal responsibility and risk management.

Ian Crossan, leader of the Step Change in Safety support team, said: "Since the beginning of the year, we have worked hard to increase our level of workforce engagement. We now have a dedicated workforce engagement work group and also have extended our leadership team to include representatives from both trade unions (RMT and Unite) respectively. Through their input, we can really focus on the needs and concerns of the offshore workforce which will be key in helping us achieve our vision of making the UKCS the safest place to work in the world-wide oil and gas industry.

"Our regular safety representative forums in particular are vital in helping Step Change develop new initiatives, providing practical feedback and suggesting new areas of focus for the Step Change in Safety team. It also gives the safety representatives a collective voice to get their views heard by senior industry leaders, providing a direct channel of communication between the workforce and the Step Change leadership team."
