Oil & Gas Industry Brings Opportunities to Graduates

Graduate Attraction
Date:10 Dec 2002
Details:THE LAUNCH of a project to attract high calibre graduates to the oil and gas industry will take place at PETEX on 10th December 2002. The UK hydrocarbon sector has joined forces with Scottish Enterprise and the Department of Trade and Industry to produce a £250,000 campaign, branded "Opportunities", which will address the predicted skills shortage.

Believed to be the first time this method has been used to promote an industry sector, the exhibition is designed to inform, inspire and attract graduates to a future within oil and gas. It contains an illustrated description of the production of hydrocarbons, along with the types of job roles possible at each stage of the process; interactive models of the latest technology used by the industry; profiles of recent graduates who have started careers in the industry; and finally, the trailer will be staffed by graduates who currently work within the sector.

Employment figures for the UK oil and gas industry predict a severe shortage of high calibre graduates, whilst market research shows that fewer and fewer graduates regard the sector as an attractive workplace. The information available is designed to address false perceptions about the industry and to highlight the various opportunities within it, including leading technology, training, travel, continual learning and challenge.

Peter Kallos, of Shell Expro UK and member of the Graduate Attraction steering group:

"This innovative project is all about opportunities in the industry. The response from students at a trial held at Napier University was extremely positive. Hopefully the trailer will stimulate a similar interest at the other universities throughout the UK."

In the first year of the campaign, the Opportunities trailer will be taken to 21 universities throughout the UK and Ireland, staying at each venue for one to three days. In later years, the intention is to visit a wider range of academic institutions.
