| Details: | Oil & Gas UK's first Supply Chain Code of Practice workshop, taking place on 29 May 2008 at the Town House in Aberdeen, will promote the adoption of smarter working practices set out in the Supply Chain Code of Practice with the objective to streamline processes, reduce risk and increase value in the oil and gas industry. The Code itself is a set of best practice guidelines which have emerged from joint efforts by industry to standardise and simplify commercial arrangements between companies. Norman McLennan, Oil & Gas UK's supply chain & commercial manager, said: "Despite high industry 'buy-in' in theory, in practice the application of the code and the extent of compliance across industry can vary considerably. We acknowledge that it may be difficult for some organisations to comply with all aspects of the Code, however the challenge remains to encourage signatories to work towards that compliance."
The latest results of Oil & Gas UK's annual compliance survey back up this view. It shows that, in theory, the Code is well received, with almost 80 per cent of respondents saying that their organisation is either supportive or highly supportive of the Code. However, in practice, certain parts of the code are not yet being fully implemented, such as the 30 day payment guarantee or the use of standard contracts and model invitations to tender. 90 per cent of respondents stated that they had not yet received tender enquiries under the new industry model ITTs and less than half of the respondents (42 per cent) had received payment for invoices within the 30 day time frame. Norman McLennan added: "These examples highlight that there is more work to be done to encourage existing signatories to be more vigorous in their application of the code. The workshop has been designed to raise awareness of the benefits that the code offers to purchasers and suppliers and also to encourage knowledge sharing from experienced supply chain industry practitioners and subject matter experts. Additionally, the workshop will include an interactive session amongst the delegates with an opportunity to influence forward thinking. "The Supply Chain Code of Practice has never been more relevant as our industry dynamics are changing with the emergence of new players and high operating costs are forcing companies to look for greater business efficiency."
